The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at The University of Iowa invites applications for two full-time, non-tenure, Instructional Faculty track Lecturer position for the academic year 2019-20, beginning August 21, 2019. The initial appointment is for one year (2019-20), renewable for up to two years (2020-21 and 2021-22), and renewable thereafter in three-year increments, pending collegiate approval and demonstrated excellence in teaching. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. This track does not include the possibility of tenure, but otherwise parallels the tenure track with various ranks (Lecturer, Associate Professor of Instruction, Professor of Instruction).
Responsibilities include: teaching four to five classes in the fall and two to three classes in the spring (average of 22-24 s.h. for the academic year). Most of the teaching will consist of Elementary and Intermediate Spanish courses with occasional opportunities to teach composition, conversation, Portuguese language, and other minor and major-level courses as needed.
Required qualifications: PhD in Spanish literature, linguistics or language acquisition/pedagogy; demonstrated excellence and at least 5 years of experience teaching Spanish language to native speakers of English at the university level in the United States; familiarity with task-based approach to language teaching and with ACTFL 5Cs standards for learning languages; and native or near-native proficiency in English and Spanish.
Desirable qualifications: Experience coordinating Spanish language courses; experience teaching Spanish for professional purposes, Spanish for heritage speakers, and/or on-line Spanish language courses; ability to teach Elementary and/or Intermediate Portuguese language.
